Происходят из южной, юго-восточной Африки, Мадагаскара, Аравии. Алоэ интродуцированы во многих тропических и субтропических странах. Алоэ широко известны своими лекарственными свойствами. Растения весма разнообразные по внешнему виду, от лазающих трав, через розеточные формы разного размера, до кустарников и крупных деревьев. Все алоэ имеют характерную листовую розетку. Листья обычно удлиненно-треугольные, иногда ремнеобразные, довольно сочные, от 2 см до 1 м длиной, от темно-зеленых до голубовато-зеленых. Поверхность листа может иметь светлые удлиненные пятна. Края листьев, а иногда и поверхность, зубчатая. Цветоносы разнообразные, боковые. Цветки от желтых через оранжевые или розовые к красным, цилиндрические, часто вздутые в основании, иногда колокольчатые. Список видов алоэ c сайта
