Austrocylindropuntia vestita f.cristata

Succulent collection of Botanical garden named A.Fomin of the Kiev national university is a largest in territory former USSR.

The collection of succulent plants in this botanical garden exists already more than 150 years. The first sowing of cacti seeds (obtained from the St.-Petersburg botanical garden) started in 1844. The collection was step-by-step enriched in systematic and quantitatively. However till 1964 did not exceed 400 sorts. Its the main development began in 70 years of ХХ century. The large contribution to development of a collection has introduced D.N.Shirobokova. In 1977 in a collection of succulents have 1855 sorts and intraspecific taxa from 239 genera were included already. The fast increase of a collection implemented due to intensive seed reproduction of plants.

Now in a collection of tropical and subtropical plants have 3338 species and 728 intraspecific taxa, which one belong to 862 genera and 183 families. 64% from them is succulents, among them are most widely shown: Cactaceae (163 genera, 1221 species and 339 forms), Crassulaceae (24 genera, 245 species, 339 forms), Aizaceae (38 genera, 177 species, 36 forms), Euphorbiaceae (9 genera, 70 species, 9 forms), Asphodelaceae (10 genera, 163 species, 13 forms), Agavaceae (3 genera, 40 species, 7 forms).

In this material we are demonstrate small part of this richest collection, which one is in a fine condition due to efforts of the scientific employees: Nikitina V.V., Gaidarzhi M.N. and Baglay K.M.
